INSTALLATION
STEP 1: CLEAN THE SOLAR PANEL
Clean Solar Panel with alcohol before applying 3M tape!!!
STEP 2: LAY OUT THE TAPE
Use 2 rows of 1″ wide 3M tape to align with each roof rib.
Center to center spacing approximately 10 1/8″
Add 1 row of 3M tape atop the foam layers (center of foam), (3 places)
1/16″ foam layer plus 1/8″ foam layer filled in area between rib tape 3 places. You must leave at least ½” gap between foam and 3M tape to avoid the angle portion of roof ribs.
Note: Some small air bubbles will appear under the foam. These can be punctured with the corner of a razor blade.
STEP 3: FILLED WITH FOAM TAPE
NOTE1: Wash and then Clay bar roof area prior to installing the vinyl underlay. I used “Mothers Detailer”
NOTE2: Clean with alcohol before applying Foam tape and Roof Solar Panel!!! 3M VHB tape must be free of contaminates for best adhesion. It also requires 72 hours to reach100% strength.
STEP 4: PUT THE PANEL ON THE ROOF
STEP 5: LAY OUT THE CABLE
STEP 6: INSTALLATION FINISHED
This 50W solar panel is designed to fit the Gladiator JT. Its dimensions are 32.7×14″. A larger panel will fit the top area of a 2014 Tacoma Access cab. Use caution as the cab roof arch increases as it goes wider (front to back). A panel as wide as 28-29″ may be possible but 21-22′ would be a safer bet.
Vinyl Underlay was made larger than required in case the leading edge of the roof solar panel began to lift away at high speeds. The intent was to add Eternabond tape if this happened. 80-90MPH speeds and panel is still holding solid.
William’s Review:
“I Installed a TakSolar 90W (5A, 18v)hood panel on my 2104 Tacoma along with a TakSolar 50W (2.8A,17.5v)panel on the top of my cab. My system uses a Redarc BCDC1240D charge controller with 2 Dakota Lithium 60Ah batteries (in parallel). I’ve had the panels about a year now and have monitored their performance at different times of the day throughout the year. The panels are performing as expected and I’ll soon be upgrading the 50W cab top panel with a larger custom sized 100w panel. So far, I’ve yet to see either panel output their max rated amps. I’ve moved the truck and adjusted the hood angle but haven’t seen the max amps as stated on the label. I’m able to maintain about 2.9amps from the hood panel and 1.9amps from the cab panel for the majority of the day, combined runs about 4.7amps. I have a 3rd 120W portable panel wired in parallel and can achieve about 11amps total with all 3 panels. These panels meet my needs for charging batteries while camping. Another plus is permanently mounted panels are convenient as my storage space is limited and it eliminates the worry about them being stolen when I’m away from camp. During the purchase and installation of the panels I had many questions, all of which were answered rapidly. TakSolar has excellent customer support, five star!
I recommend TakSolar panels and plan to add them to my other vehicles.”
